Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) president Larry Sng has quit as party chief and withdrawn from the electoral race for the state seat of Bukit Goram, because he felt he could not truly serve the constituents without being in BN.

"The truth of the matter was the realization that this election was shaping up to be the most expensive election. I believe I could have won, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to service the people the way they remembered me. Only through BN could I have done so," said Larry in an emotional post on his Facebook page tonight.

"The decision not to contest was a very painful one. So painful in fact that I lost four kilograms in five days. I could not eat nor sleep and was stressed out. I couldn't concentrate and yet I put on a brave face when I am with the public to assure them that I am standing.

"That was the realisation. My heart and my mind was at odds with one another. I wanted to stand but if I truly loved the people, I knew what needs to be done. I needed to resign and point them in the right direction," Larry said.

SWP, formed in 2012, is seen to be BN friendly but not affiliated formally with the ruling coalition.

Larry, 36, is the son of Sng Chee Hua, the former deputy president of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS). Both Sngs later helped form Parti Rakyat Sarawak in 2004.

Larry was later fired from the party in 2007 for challenging its current president James Masing.

The Sng family holds business interests in the Kapit region and commands some support from the surrounding Chinese and Iban communities.

Larry is also the son-in-law of construction tycoon Ting Pek Khiing.

"Serving Kapit was one of the best things that ever happened to me since joining politics at the age of 21 years. It was the first job I landed after leaving university and it was and still is my passion to serve.

"I did so wholeheartedly and regarded everyone as family," he said.

Larry lamented that he had given up the best years of his life for politics: "I didn't have much of a life apart from my work and much of my youth passed by without notice. I dressed like an old man and kept an old hair style just to fit in with my colleagues.

"I didn't engage in any form of business and all my income from work went back to the people in the form of donations to the needy, deceased and my education fund.

"We all made sacrifices and I know many people will find it hard to accept my decision, but honestly I can tell you that it is I who feel the pain the most.

"I hope that they will find it in their hearts to accept this and to forgive me," he said.

Larry went on to thank party supporters and a few prominent figures.

"Lastly, I want to thank my mentor, the Governor Taib Mahmud, who had guided me in the past and more recently the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia (Muhyiddin Yassin) and the present Chief Minister of Sarawak (Adenan Satem). I do hope Sarawakians will give him five more years to steer our state to greater heights," he said.

Larry served as Pelagus state assemblyperson from 2001 until 2011, when he was not renominated by state BN leadership.

He was expected to challenge Parti Persaka Bumiputera Bersatu's (PBB) Jefferson Jamit in the May 7 election.
