Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has given his assurance that Selangor residents will not face water shortage even though dam water levels are decreasing by the day.

The Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyperson said this is because the state government consistently monitors the dam water levels as well as takes other proactive measures.

“During the previous state Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting, the water issue was among the things we discussed.

“We have taken several proactive measures with the hybrid off-rover augmentation system (Horas) as well as cloud seeding, which we have been doing in the last few months,” Azmin told reporters at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) in Ampang last night.

Klang MP Charles Santiago has warned that Selangor residents will soon face water shortage problems.

This is because water levels in the Sungai Selangor and Semenyih dams are depleting fast, at a daily average of 0.62 percent and 0.47 percent respectively.

Therefore, Santiago said, the state government must take action before the Klang Valley is faced with a water shortage crisis.

'Well above critical'

Azmin in a statement later added the Selangor's dams were faring better than other states.

"In contrast to other states currently undergoing water shortages, the water levels at dams throughout Selangor remained well above critical levels as of 20 April 2016," he said.

The levels are: Sungai Selangor Dam (65.51%), Sungai Tinggi Dam (75.76%), Sungai Semenyih Dam (69.50%), Sungai Langat Dam (73.27%), Batu Dam (71%), Klang Gates Dam (62.93%), and Tasik Subang Dam (86.54%).

However the menteri besar echoed calls for all Selangorians to conserve water.

“We cannot afford to be complacent because the El Nino phenomenon will continue to affect rainfall levels and our water supply.

“I hope that all Selangorians will take responsible water conservation measures during this dry spell.

"Reduce your use of water hoses for washing cars or watering your plants.

"Factories with high water usage should install water recycling systems,” advised Azmin.

He also ordered local councils to take action on unlicensed car washes, and advised Air Selangor to step up enforcements on cases of water theft.

Waze potholes reports

On another matter, Azmin this morning said road users in Selangor may soon be able to report potholes to the local government councils using the phone navigation application Waze.

“A few days ago, I discussed this with Waze representatives, who have agreed to offer their services to the Selangor state government," he said.

Road users who encounter potholes can share them through Waze and this will be detected by the municipal councils’ dashboard, the menteri besar said.

“And in less than 72 hours, the municipal council in particular will be able to detect the potholes in question using the coordinates."

The Waze facility to tackle the potholes problem will involve six major Selangor city and municipal councils: MPAJ, MBPJ, MPKJ, MPK, MBSA and MPSJ.
