YOURSAY | ‘Why can't an Iban Christian be the CM in Sarawak?’

Don't squander opportunity to lead S'wak, minority Muslims told

Gerard Lourdesamy: What hypocrisy is this? So a Muslim minority is entitled to lead Sarawak but in Peninsular Malaysia, political power must be in the hands of the Malays because they are the majority.

Why can't an Iban Christian be the CM in Sarawak? I am certain that he will treat the Muslim minority with fairness and justice.

It is obvious that even without Umno in Sarawak, the PBB is playing the same role, namely its divide-and-rule policy to ensure that the Ibans remain second-class citizens in their own land and forever be at the mercy of the Muslim minority. This is a travesty of democracy.

The Muslim minority can manipulate the system to remain in power in Sarawak with the connivance of Umno, but the non-Muslim majority there cannot even aspire for political power.

ACR: Sarawak CM Adenan Satem is one of the most cunning Melanau politicians.

He makes populist statements like “quitting office if Umno enters Sarawak” and banning so-called extremists from entering Sarawak yet his own party operates like Umno in maintaining bumiputera-Muslim hegemony and allowing extremists of the same ilk to roam free.

It is easy to see through his doublespeak.

Pahatian: The Christian-majority and Dayak-majority state of Sarawak was hijacked by BN and its allies where the state government is taken over by Muslim leaders way back in the 1970s.

Since then these allegedly corrupted leaders have not only enriched themselves but also their relatives and cronies.

And Nangka assemblyperson Annuar Rapaee has the cheek to say that the Muslim minority is governing the Christian majority, and this status quo should be maintained by getting all Muslims to vote BN into power again.

So all Sarawakians, Muslims and Christians alike and the others, should vote for a more just and non-corrupt government, not one based on race and religion but on good governance and transparency.

Anonymous 2405561458171517: Yes, when it suits them, the minority can rule but when it does not, it is almost a crime to suggest that a leader from the minority race/religion can lead.

Who cares what race or religion you are anyway when choosing a ‘wakil rakyat’ (people’s representative)?

Race perhaps becomes relevant only when you are choosing an actress to portray Tina Turner. For example, you can't possibly hire Michelle Yeoh to act as Tina Turner, nor Tina Turner as Michelle Yeoh.

Religion becomes relevant when you are choosing the chief high priest maybe. But certainly not when it comes to political leadership.

Vijay47: Only Umno-inspired politicians can keep a straight pious face when they claim to be not racist when making the most racist of statements.

Annuar has the additional gift of being blessed with a particularly heavy dose of idiocy bearing in mind his revelation of his party being "seen to play justice to everybody".

Yes, like in keeping the entire majority community in abject poverty, ignorance, and abysmal lack of education. Except outgoing Deputy CM Alfred Jabu, of course.

Had non-Muslims made a similar call, our good friend the Twitter king IGP (inspector-general of police) would have gone to town with them.

But the real tragedy is that the Dayaks are so splintered that they do not even realise that united, they could form the state government and give Umno and PPB a run for the money.

Except Alfred Jabu, of course.

Dr M will never apologise to Najib over 'slander', says Ali Rustam

Oxymoronictendencies: It would be nice to believe that PM Najib Abdul Razak is as innocent as he and his supporters claim; however, for now that belief remains a pipe dream.

There has been so much effort, by the PM and his supporters, being put into suppressing the truth (whatever the truth maybe) surrounding the donations and the 1MDB issues that the denials just don't stack up.

If there has been no wrongdoing with any of these issues, why resist independent investigations? Surely an innocent man wants the truth to emerge.

Denials alone are never going to stand unless they are supported by hard facts. Unfortunately, the weight of evidence in regard to both 1MDB and the donations is for now clearly supporting the veracity of the allegations of corruption and fraud.

The is no smoke without fire. And the flames are clearly visible. And now the scapegoats are being lined up for the sacrifice. We will just have to wait and see how loudly or quietly the scapegoats accept their lot.

Negarawan: One by one, the perpetrators behind the 1MDB mega scandal are getting arrested outside of Malaysia.

After all, 1MDB is being investigated in more than five countries, including by the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

How is it then that Umno leader Mohd Ali Rustam is saying the allegations are a lie? Malaysia is the epicentre of the scandal and yet till today there has been not one single arrest and charge made.

As rightly pointed out by The Economist , investigations within Malaysia have been “timid or stymied”, therefore leaving “other countries to make the running”.

It is just a matter of time before Umno's implacable fortress of corruption will be demolished.

Odin Tajué: Mohd Ali, if you accuse someone of having defamed you orally or in writing, you take the person to court. If you do not do that, it means that the person's statement is factual and not defamatory. Do you understand?

Since Najib has not taken any step to take The Wall Street Journal to court, then what the publication has published about the flow of money to his bank accounts is factual.
