Cinema operator GSC today assured that only adults and non-Muslims are allowed to purchase beer from its outlets.

This comes following complaints from the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) that selling alcohol at cinemas could encourage drinking among cinema-goers and minors.

"This sale is strictly limited to the adult patrons in GSC Premier and Gold Class lounges

"As a responsible organisation, our cinemas comply with the local laws and do not sell beer to Muslims and minors below the age of 18," it said in an email to Malaysiakini .

It added that its customers "come from all walks of life".

"GSC always strives to ensure our cinemas are open to all as we believe in providing great value and comfortable setting for everyone to enjoy the magic of movies on the big screen," it said.

PHA deputy president P Murugiah last week said the NGO has complained to the relevant authorities over the matter.

"(We want) action against those responsible for the sale of beer in cinema theatres," he said.
