Cartoonist Zoy dies from colon complications

Cartoonist Zoy or Mohd Zohri Sukimi,57, died from colon complications at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR), Klang, at about 4am today.

He was famous for the comics strips ‘Takluk Jagat’, ‘Pendekar Sijangkang’ and ‘Keris Gajah Sewu’.

Zoy was the head of Berita Harian’s Graphics Unit until his retirement in December 2014.

His eldest son Mohd Iqbal Razi,33, said Zoy began dabbling in cartoons since school and his works were published in Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia newspapers.

Zoy also used to be a guest cartoonist for the popular comic strip ‘Apo?’ and his works were published in Berita Harian every weekend.

“Although my father retired two years ago, he is still active and still sent his works to newspapers for publication,” he told Bernama today.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Cartoonists Club secretary Buhairi Ramli said Zoy’s death has a big impact on the cartoon industry since he was the pioneer of silat cartoons.

“Zoy’s death is a big loss for the Malaysian cartoon industry because he was our reference when it comes to silat cartoons.

“This is because of his background in silat. His silat cartoons will be sorely missed by fans,” he added.

Zoy leaves a wife, four children and three grandchildren.

His remains were buried at the Muslim cemetery at Batu 8, Sijangkang, Banting, at about 11.30am.
