It is up to the PAS central committee to decide whether the party should accept or decline PKR deputy president Azmin Ali’s invitation for the Islamist party to join Pakatan Harapan.

PAS vice president Iskandar Samad said this in response to Azmin's call for PAS to come together with PKR, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) as one team to face the next general election.

“The decision on (Azmin’s invitation) can only be made by the PAS central committee. Selangor PAS cannot make the decision,” Iskandar told Malaysiakini.

In the aftermath of the opposition’s humiliating defeat at the Sarawak election last weekend, instead of indulging in a blame game, the Selangor menteri besar called on opposition parties to close ranks instead.

“Amanah and PAS must continue to soldier on together with PKR and DAP so that all of us can move forward to face GE14 together - as a team,” Azmin said yesterday.

The Sarawak election on Saturday saw BN winning 72 out of the 82 seats it contested in.

DAP, which previously held 12 state seats, lost five of them and only won seven of the 31 seats contested, while PKR only managed to retain its previous three seats and lost in 38 other constituencies it contested.

PAS and its arch-rival Amanah both lost in all the seats they contested in.

PAS had earlier declined to join the new coalition Pakatan Harapan, and instead joined hands with fledgling party Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) in March.
