PAS should welcome PKR deputy president Azmin Ali's call for the Islamist party to join the opposition coalition with PKR, DAP and Amanah, said Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar.

Mahfuz, formerly PAS information chief, said to him, Azmin's invitation came after he realised that the opposition's loss in Sarawak was partly due to PKR and DAP contesting against each other.

“Although that was not the main basis that led to the opposition's defeat, it gave a message to the people.

“All opposition parties need to go back to the discussion table and put together a coalition that will give new hope to the rakyat, that there will be a change in Malaysia in the near future.

"Egos must be lowered so that those involved can see the people want change. It must start with a united and strong opposition coalition,” the Pokok Sena MP said in a statement today.

To Mahfuz, Azmin's offer is with the hope that the various problems facing the country can be resolved by coordinating the people from the various backgrounds, political ideologies and NGOs, into a united coalition.

With this, he hoped that Malaysia would be placed on the right track towards developing into a nation free from political abuse, with an economy free from corruption and misuse of public funds, and with a focus on a new economic policy to lessen the rising cost of living faced by the people.

“The people dream of having a viable opposition coalition that can raise the people's confidence as the government in waiting. Hence, it is wise that all opposition party leaders avoid narrow thinking that fronts the interest of their political party only.

“I am hopeful that PAS leaders will welcome Azmin's offer which can be viewed as in the public's interest.

“This is about the opposition coalition along with other parties and NGOs, fighting for change in the interests of Malaysia and its people,” he said.

It was reported yesterday that Azmin did not want the opposition to play the blame game over the Sarawak polls, declaring that now was not the time for recrimination but for reflection.

"Although PKR has maintained its seats, DAP's defeat is our defeat. In fact, the defeat of any member of the coalition is a defeat for PKR. In this regard, Amanah and PAS must continue to soldier on together with PKR and DAP so that all of us can move forward to face GE14 together – as a team.

"They say the lessons of history are always there to guide us if only we listen," the PKR deputy president had said.
