Selangor PAS has short-listed six potential candidates for the upcoming Sungai Besar by-election, said its treasurer Zaidy Abdul Talib.

He expressed hope there would not be a three-corner fight for the parliamentary seat, but stressed that as far as the state party leadership is concerned, PAS will contest in the by-election.

"Wallahu a'lam (Allah would know better)," he said, when asked whether a three-corner fight is possible.

"We hope not, but PAS is firm and consistent that we will contest," he told reporters after attending the launch of the Selangor government's free bus service for Selayang.

Zaidy said the Islamist party is already prepared for the by-election, due to earlier preparation it made in anticipation of the 14th general election, and a strong support base in the constituency.

As for potential candidates, he said there is a long list for PAS to choose from but the state leadership has identified six individuals – all of whom are Sungai Besar locals.

"But whatever the case, we leave it to the central leadership to decide. I just want to let you know we have a long list to choose from and we are not short on capable candidates," he said.

To a question, he said there are no formal talks between Selangor PAS and PKR regarding the Sungai Besar seat, and that would depend on directions from the party’s central leadership.

Nevertheless, he said, there are still informal engagements between PAS and PKR leaders on the issue.

The Sungai Besar seat became vacant after its incumbent Noriah Kasnon was killed in a helicopter crash on May 5 while campaigning in Sarawak, together with five others.

Also killed in the incident were her husband Asmuni Abdullah and Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Muhammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad.

The Election Commission (EC) has set June 18 as the polling date for both the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.

Both seats are traditionally contested between Umno and PAS.

While PAS is adamant in contesting in Sungai Besar, Pakatan Harapan has yet to decide whether to contest the seat.
