Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin may have been influenced by new Filipino president Rodrigo Duterte when he suggested that drug addicts and dealers be shot, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said.

"This is the (influence) of the new Filipino president, infecting everyone to shoot (criminals)," Nur Jazlan quipped.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament lobby, he said Malaysia has its own laws to deal with criminals and the punishment does not include shooting people.

Duterte made a name for himself with his tough stance against crime, and during his campaign he pledged to kill criminals if he won the election.

Nur Jazlan also downplayed concerns that plans by police to install CCTV cameras in crime hotspots will affect privacy.

"Some people might want to go to Bukit Bintang without people knowing. But fighting crime is more important than privacy concerns."

He said the cameras would be equipped with facial recognition software to help police identify criminals.

The plan, Nur Jazlan added, has not yet been approved, budget-wise.
