Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's letter warning PKR leaders against getting too carried away with the Citizens' Declaration is not an excuse to stop calling for prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's resignation.

Salor assemblyperson Husam Musa said this is because Anwar is mindful of the 1.27 million Malaysians who have signed the declaration to seek Najib's removal from office.

He pointed out Anwar had instead cautioned the leaders to not forget about the larger reform agenda.

"This must be taken into consideration by the Citizens' Declaration (leaders). The matter (reforms) in part has been incorporated within the declaration," Husam stressed.

"(However, Anwar's) letter cannot be used to say that he is not interested to see Najib resign. Najib must resign.

"Anwar appreciates the 1.27 million signatories to the Citizens' Declaration. He will never forget them," Husam told reporters last night.

He was speaking at the 'Dialogue with Husam' session at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

The dialogue was organised as a platform to air his views following his sacking from PAS.

In his eight-page handwritten letter released on Monday, Anwar had triggered an outcry over his open criticisms of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Citizens' Declaration, as well as other issues including treachery in Malaysian politics.

Apart from Mahathir, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah were also not spared Anwar's criticisms.

The gist of his message was that there are PKR leaders who have conspired with Mahathir through the Citizens' Declaration, to the point of undermining PKR's struggle.

'PAS, give Harapan one seat’

The former PAS deputy president, meanwhile, also advised the Islamist party to concede either the Sungai Besar or Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seats in the upcoming twin by-elections.

Husam said this is because it would be impossible for PAS to achieve victory without support from Chinese voters.

"I advise PAS to give one seat to Pakatan Harapan, either PKR or Amanah, because the Chinese won't support PAS," he said.

Commenting further, Husam cited the possible loss of over 30 percent Chinese voters' support, after PAS broke ranks with the DAP and triggered the breakup of then Pakatan Rakyat.

However PAS remains part of the opposition-led Selangor government with its 15 seats won in the 2013 13th general elections.

Two of its assemblypersons have since left to join Amanah.

The Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar seats fell vacant after the deaths of incumbents Noriah Kasnon and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, in the May 5 Sarawak helicopter tragedy.

The Election Commission has set June 5 for nominations for both seats, followed by two weeks of campaigning, and polling on June 18.
