Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali is slated to meet with Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) leaders to discuss candidates for the upcoming Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.

A source told Malaysiakini that the meeting is expected to take place later today following the menteri besar’s reported ultimatum to three PAS Selangor state executive councillors.

The Star, quoting sources, claimed that Azmin had asked the excos to resign by Monday if PAS insisted on contesting the Sungai Besar by-election, instead of allowing for a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan and BN.

Contacted later, Amanah strategic director Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed that he is among the leaders slated to meet Azmin.

"We are meeting as colleagues... The most important thing is that Pakatan Harapan knows what Pakatan Harapan wants.

"We want a Pakatan Harapan representative (to contest)," he said.

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, had reportedly conveyed the ultimatum to Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Samad and the other PAS excos, Sijangkang assemblyperson Ahmad Yunus Hairi and Taman Templer assemblyperson Zaidy Abdul Talib, after the state exco meeting yesterday.

Malaysiakini has contacted all three excos for comment but only Zaidy responded via Whatsapp, with "no comment".

Azmin earlier yesterday reportedly told reporters in Sungai Besar that he was still in talks with PAS, Amanah and DAP to work something out.

In the last general election, PAS had contested in both the seats, which were won by Umno with small majorities.

Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, however, denied that he had met Azmin over the by-elections.

Sources previously claimed that the negotiations between Azmin and PAS were based on a purported offer for PKR to stand in Sungai Besar, while the latter will stand in Kuala Kangsar.

The Star, meanwhile, also quoted sources who said that Hadi had during an emergency meeting at his house in Terengganu last night, instructed all three excos to not resign from their positions.

The three PAS excos were retained as part of the Selangor state government, despite their party being left out of the federal opposition pact formed last year.

As it stands, the 56-seat seat Selangor Pakatan Harapan state government now comprises 13 PKR assemblypersons, 14 from DAP and two from Amanah.

The opposition bench comprises 13 assemblypersons from PAS, 12 from BN and two Independents.

The Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar seats fell vacant after the recent deaths of its incumbents, Noriah Kasnon and Wan Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak.
