Unusually heavy rainfall caused Putrajaya flash floods on May 7

Unusually heavy rainfall with average of 122mm compared to only 30mm on a normal day was among reasons for the flash floods here on May 7.

Putrajaya Corporation president Hasim Ismail said strong winds blew away the leaves and twigs, which clogged the waterways, causing the water level to rise quickly.

“Only one area, Dataran Gemilang was flooded. The drains in Putrajaya were built to accommodate rainfall for 100 years.

“The rainfall on that day was too heavy,” he said when asked about the Putrajaya Corporation's study on the flash floods in Putrajaya on May 7.

In the incident, several areas near Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Dataran Gemilang in Precinct 3 and Precinct 4 were flooded after heavy rainfall.
