Former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim is still facing five more charges but the Attorney-General's Chambers will only review whether to proceed after his (Anwar's) appeals on two earlier convictions are disposed of.

The courts have not fixed a date to hear the matter yet because the appeal process has not been completed, according to the head of the prosecution division Abdul Gani Patail.

AG Mohtar Abdullah told reporters today in Putrajaya that the fixing of dates in the court was not within the purview of the AG's Chamber.

The five extra charges involve four counts of sodomy and one of corruption.

Mohtar was speaking after delivering a keynote speech at a conference for legal officers.

Asked if the five charges against Anwar would be dropped, Mohtar replied: "We will only look into the matter after the appeals (for the previous two cases) are over," said Mohtar.

Earlier this year, Anwar was found guilty of corruption and sodomy, and sentenced to jail for six years and nine years respectively, to be served consecutively.

In his keynote speech, Mohtar stated that the Anwar trials had severely "sapped the resources of the prosecution division".

While acknowledging that the Anwar trials had become centrepiece both locally and internationally, Mohtar did not want to comment further as it would be "sub judice" since Anwar's appeals are still pending.

"Nevertheless, I would like to stress that the AG's Chamber's decision to act or not depends wholly on the police and the Anti-Corruption Agency. Nobody's above the law," he said.
