Former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said he is not interested in contesting in the forthcoming Sungai Besar by-election.

“I don't even think about that,” Khir said when reporters asked him about the by-election after he was released from his two-month parole in Klang today.

For now, he said, he wanted to rest first and spend more time with his family.

He also added that it is only speculation that he might be nominated for the by-election.

Khir was granted parole on March 29, after serving six months in Kajang Prison for using his position to obtain land and a bungalow, nine years ago.

Asked if he would contribute to the party machinery in Sungai Besar, Khir said he would, if he was needed.

“If needed, I’ll see how. Sungai Besar is my area,” he said, adding that his family members are there and that he still visits them.

Commenting further on the by-election, he said he hoped there would not be any “hatred politics” during the campaign.

If we want to discourage people from voting for others, he said, it should not be by making them hate the others.

People should decide who they want to vote for based on someone’s policies, Khir explained.

“Look at the recent elections in the Philippines. It's not like in Malaysia, where we practice hatred politics to the maximum.

“Now we’re teaching our youths this extreme hatred. It's not healthy for us,” he said.

Granted parole after serving six months

Khir was originally sentenced to a one-year jail term, but was been granted parole after serving six months.

His two months’ parole period was served at his family's house in Shah Alam and among the conditions imposed were that he was not allowed to speak to the press.

Under the parole system, the prisoner will serve his remaining sentence outside the prison and live with his family while under the supervision of a parole officer.

The by-elections for Sungai Besar in Selangor and Kuala Kangsar in Perak will be held on June 18.

They were called following the death of incumbent Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Muhammad Khair-il Wan Ahmad and Sungai Besar MP Noriah Kasnon in a helicopter crash on May 5, during the Sarawak election campaign.
