PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail claimed there are enemies trying to split the party leadership ahead of the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.

"There are indeed efforts by our enemies trying to take opportunity during these two by-elections to pit leaders against each other and split them through various means, even hurling slander at the leadership of the Selangor government.

"However, the PKR leadership and I, including in Selangor, will not be trapped by the desperate efforts of those using the media to distract the people from the problems of the Umno-BN's leadership which is plagued by financial scandals, poor governance and policies that burden the people," she said in a statement today.

Wan Azizah also expressed confidence in Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali's leadership, saying that she is certain that he will take action if any wrongdoings in the state government were proven.

Her statement comes four days before nomination day for the twin by-elections.

While BN and PAS are already gearing up for the by-election, PKR has yet to mobilise its machinery.

Selangor PKR deputy chief Zuraida Kamaruddin said the state party had yet to receive instructions to mobilise its machinery and would only decide to do so after nomination day.

This was despite Azmin pledging on May 12 that he would practically be living in the Sungai Besar constituency until the by-election is over.

Azmin had been absent from several events since negotiations with PAS for a one-on-one battle in the by-elections failed.

PKR would have contested the Sungai Besar by-election had Azmin been successful in convincing PAS to stay out, but it is now likely that Parti Amanah Negara will represent Pakatan Harapan instead.

Wan Azizah said one-on-one contest against BN would have been the most ideal situation and PKR had strived for this.

However, she said it was regretful that this was not possible in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.

She reiterated that the enemy is ultimately BN-Umno.

"The political enemy is only Umno-BN.

"Let us close ranks, mobilise and unite to topple the country's main political enemy and save Malaysia," she said.
