Police seek to plug Bank Negara leak

Police are expected to quiz Bank Negara's financial intelligence department director as well as several staff over a letter by the central bank that was allegedly leaked to The Wall Street Journal.

The letter, which is classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA), reportedly confirmed that Good Star Limited, which received US$1.03 billion from 1MDB, is owned by billionaire Jho Low.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua urged the new 1MDB board, which was appointed by the Finance Ministry two days ago, to find out what had happened to some US$7 billion that is still unaccounted for.

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak must answer for the alleged misuse of 1MDB’s funds, while former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad insisted that the rulers should intervene in the scandal.

Meanwhile, Najib told investors at the World Economic Forum that the country is facing a lot of “noise” on the issue of trust, but insisted it is merely a perception.

Harapan finally enters fray in Sungai Besar

Pakatan Harapan unveiled its Sungai Besar Amanah division chief Azhar Abdul Shukur as its candidate in the Sungai Besar by-election to contest against PAS and BN.

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali was noticeably absent at the event while PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail claimed that enemies are trying to split the party leadership ahead of the by-elections in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar.

Selangor PKR deputy chief Zuraida Kamaruddin said the state party had yet to mobilise for the Sungai Besar by-election despite the fact that PAS and BN were already in full battle gear, stating that the matter would only be decided on nomination day.

There was similarly a flap in PAS when a party delegate questioned the nomination of Abdul Rani Osman as candidate for the Sungai Besar by-election as he is seen to be close to Amanah.

Likewise, in Umno, a grassroots member rained expletives on BN’s candidate Mastura Mohd Yazid for the Kuala Kangsar by-election, claiming that she was not qualified to contest the seat, which was declared vacant after her husband was killed in a helicopter crash.

Other Kini bites

Several homeless people have claimed they were rounded up by KL City Hall (DBKL) and dumped outside the city.

PAS Youth chief Nik Abdul Nik Abdul Aziz claimed Parti Amanah Negara was formed after DAP got its leaders “drunk”.

The Johor crown prince tells critics to ask Najib to remove Johor from the Malaysian federation if they are not happy with the state.

The legal drinking age will be raised to 21 next year, coupled with tougher liquor control measures.

Federal minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan promises a “happy ending” to the hudud row.

Pakatan Harapan is set to announce its candidate for the Kuala Kangsar by-election tonight after unveiling its Sungai Besar candidate yesterday.

The muktamar of PAS’ central body commences tomorrow where leaders are expected to give an indication of the party’s direction for next year.
