Another Independent candidate for Kuala Kangsar?

Sacked Umno leader and former Sungai Rapat assemblyperson Hamidah Osman has kept mum over whether she would be contesting as an Independent candidate in the upcoming Kuala Kangsar by-election.

Sinar Harian reported Hamidah, also a former Wanita Umno Gopeng division chief, as saying that anything is possible in this current political scenario.

At the same time, she also predicted that BN would be facing an uphill battle to win the election, based on a purported failure to field the right candidate.

"Even if we go out (to campaign) it is difficult for people to give us their votes, what more if we don't (go out).

"For me, even though we are living in times of technology, any candidate must go down to meet the people, explain their vision and mission," she said, referring to the Umno candidate’s inability to campaign openly due to her mourning period.

The Kuala Kangsar seat fell vacant after the recent death of its incumbent, Wan Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, in a helicopter crash just before the Sarawak state polls.

BN last Friday announced Wan Khair-il Anwar's widow, Mastura Mohd Yazid, as their candidate despite her inability to go out and campaign, as she must observe the four months iddah period according to Islam.

Hamidah, who was sacked from Umno last year, said Mastura’s candidacy has raised questions among Umno members.

"I personally don't understand what the criteria for BN to choose her to contest are, when we know her current status (in mourning)," she added.

So far, the battle for Kuala Kangsar will see Mastura going up against PAS' Najihatussalehah Ahmad and Amanah's Termizi Ramli.

Umno grassroots member Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamalullail has also indicated he would be contesting as an Independent, despite threats of sacking from the party.

Nominations for Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar takes place this Sunday, while polling will be on June 18.
