DAP Youth exco member Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud appears to have taken a stab at the keris showing at the PAS muktamar yesterday asking if it was really necessary.

“I don’t have a keris, but I have a lightsaber.

“Would Obi Wan Kenobi be happy to use his lightsaber to cut a cake?” asked Dyana in a tongue-in-cheek posting on Facebook.

The posting accompanied a photograph of the former Teluk Intan candidate brandishing a toy lightsaber in the manner of the famous Star Wars character.

Although she did not mention names, she was likely referring to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who at the party’s 62nd muktamar yesterday brandished a giant mock keris, the traditional Malay dagger, to cut a green and white pulut (glutinous rice) 'cake' resembling the party's flag.

A reader agreeing with Dyana, commented on her posting, “Personally, I think that using a keris to cut cake is an insult to the keris... To me, the keris is a symbol of strength, not a cake-cutting implement.”

PAS’ interest in traditional ancient Malay customs raised eyebrows at this year’s muktamar.

Their dress code departure in terms of their traditional white robes, which this year made way for old world Malay costumes, drew ridicule from their former members.

Amanah, in rebutting PAS Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz’s claim that the former's leaders’ drunkenness had caused them to leave PAS to form the splinter party, quipped those with a penchant for dressing in ancient warrior costumes in the modern age, are the ones more likely to be under the influence of alcohol.
