Diabetics need not resort to amputation in these modern times, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang was reminded today over the latter’s arguments for implementing hudud to reduce crime.

“Amputation is not the only cure for diabetes. There are other medications now including insulin. We have to move with times,” wrote Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang on his Twitter.

He was responding to Hadi’s claim last night that hudud was the only way to curb crime, just as amputation is necessary to save a diabetic’s life.

The PAS chief asked why no one objected to doctors amputating a patient, but would object to the hudud punishment of amputation for stealing.

“Not so many people now require amputation for diabetes. There are new medications that may prevent that (infection). It's just how you see things. Be open,” tweeted Tan in response.

He asked if he suffered other maladies, would the doctor also proceed to remove the offending body part without considering the after effects.

“I'm having acute pancreatitis. If my doctor used Hadi’s analogy, he would simply remove my pancreas. No need to allow it to heal. (What happens) post amputation?”

The long-running row over PAS’ insistence on implementing hudud in Kelantan erupted again in the run up to the twin by-elections, after Hadi’s motion on his Private Member’s Bill was moved up the parliamentary order paper.

While BN’s non-Muslim parties have been up in arms against PAS for the bill, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said yesterday revealed the instructions to fast track Hadi’s motion came from BN chief Prime Minister Najib Razak and his deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi themselves.
