Parti Amanah Negara vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa has given voters in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar some reasons why they must not support Umno in the twin by-elections slated for June 18.

“The voters must protest against the prime minister and BN government by rejecting BN and Umno’s candidates,” Mujahid said in a statement today.

“They must also reject the PAS candidate who did not stand up to protest against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, his silent cabinet and its BN members,” he added.

“Only an Amanah candidate from Pakatan Harapan is committed to save the country and protest against the actions of the prime minister for allegedly abusing public funds and shaming Malaysia in the eyes of the world,” he said.

Mujahid said BN led by Umno has undermined the country’s institutions while Najib has purportedly abused his powers for his own personal interest.

Besides the globally known 1MDB scandal and the RM2.6 billion donation in his private bank accounts, Mujahid said Najib was responsible for undermining institutions like the attorney-general chambers.

“The former attorney-general’s (Abdul Gani Patail's) tenure was cut short (before his retirement); he was the chairman of the committee that was investigating the 1MDB (scandal). Gani was replaced by Mohamed Apandi Ali,” he said.

Mujahid (photo) alleged that a charge sheet had been prepared on Najib but the new attorney-general has now cleared the prime minister of any wrongdoing.

Mujahid also reminded that Najib had dissolved the Public Accounts Committee by appointing its chairperson Pulai MP Jazlan Mohamad Rahmat into his cabinet as a federal minister.

The committee had begun its probe on the 1MDB and had nearly completed it when it was abruptly dissolved with the appointment of the new chairman (Hasan Arifin).

He pointed out that Najib also transferred staff from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and police who were investigating the 1MDB case.

Mujahid accused Najib of doing this by “interfering in the probe in which he has an interest”.

“He used laws like Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) on those like former Umno Batu Kawan deputy chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer Matthias Chang who want the case to be resolved soon.

“Such a move is serious as Sosma should be used to tackle violence and not against those who lodged complaints about mismanagement and misappropriation of the country’s funds.

“He (Najib) also classified the auditor-general’s report on 1MDB under the Officials Secrets Act and by doing this, Najib has allegedly abused the law to hide misappropriation of public funds.

“Why need OSA if the 1MDB funds were not misappropriated?” he asked.

Mujahid said Najib’s government had also gazetted the National Security Council Bill which gives large powers to the prime minister and will usurp the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power to declare emergency in the land.
