The fight against illegal logging in the state has been a success.

State Resource Planning and Environment Minister Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said in 2014, a total of 241 cases involving 90,873 cubic metres of logs were recorded.

"But last year, this went down to only 208 cases involving 47,060 cubic metres of logs which were confiscated.

"This indicates the cases have decreased by 13 percent while the volume of logs confiscated also decreased by 48 percent," he said in his winding-up speech at the state legislative assembly sitting in Kuching today.

He said the government would continue to use high technology method like drone, hyperspectral and satelite imagery to combat the menace especially at its onset.

"We will also set up the One Stop Compliance Centre (OSCC) in each logging areas aimed at increasing the monitoring of offences, compliance of licensing terms and to facilitate royalty determining works.

"A strict compliance too will help us minimise destruction to our forest and environment more effciently," he said.

He said a total of 48 OSCC had been proposed for this year with 27 of them to be fully operational.
