A family in Sungai Way suspects Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) purported negligence is to blame after their home was razed in a fire recently.

But the electricity provider has ignored their request for an explanation, prompting some 20 members of the extended family to go public yesterday with the help of Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lau Weng San.

"We met our village head and he brought us to see YB (Lau). YB helped us to send a letter to TNB but they have not replied at all," said Chai Lian Choy, a member of the family.

The family claimed the electricity meter box at their home on Sungai Way SS9A/18 was not working properly, as it was loose and its reading was erratic.

They said they contacted TNB's Petaling Jaya branch for an inspection but was informed there was nothing wrong.

However, they said they were promised that a service team would replace the electrical meter for them.

But before this could be done, lightning struck an electricity pole by their home, sparking a fire which destroyed their house, they said.

Lau was unhappy that TNB had yet to respond to the letter he wrote to its PJ branch.

"I wrote a letter to PJ's TNB branch within a month of the fire incident to request for a meeting but TNB did not reply.

"I hope that TNB can come forward and meet us to give a response," he told journalists at the site of the burnt house.

Sungai Way village chief Ding Eow Chai said it was fortunate the fire incident did not cause worse damage.

"Luckily, the wind was blowing in the direction of an apartment block. Had the wind blown to the other side where there are wooden houses, the situation may have been more serious," he said.

The burnt house is situated between the apartment and the wooden houses.

When contacted, a TNB headquarters spokesperson said the electricity provider was looking into the matter.

The spokesperson verified the family's claim that TNB had promised to fix the electricity meter.

"However, when our team arrived on the same day, it was found the fire had occured which cause was unknown," the spokesperson told Malaysiakini.

She said TNB will refer the matter to the Energy Commission for a detailed investigation to identify the cause of the fire.

She added the family was already informed of this matter.

TNB's PJ branch did not respond to calls for a response.
