Man held for allegedly insulting Tunku Mahkota of Johor

Police detained a man this afternoon for allegedly using insulting words against the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, via the social website Facebook.

Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the 31-year-old man was detained at Taman Bukit Bendera, Mentakab, Pahang following a police report lodged against him on June 2.

The man was said to have uploaded a message which had insulted and offended the Tunku Mahkota of Johor via his Facebook account known as ‘Chong Choonhau’.

“Also seized were two tablets. The suspect will be remanded tomorrow at the Johor Baru Magistrate’s Court to enable police to complete investigation,” he said in a statement in Johor Baru today.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year’s jail, or both upon conviction.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin also advised members of the public against abusing social networking sites.
