An MCA leader has condemned the killing of Sarawakian activist and PKR state election candidate Bill Kayong in Miri this morning.

Ti Lian Ker also urged the police to provide adequate protection for other activists who are also facing danger due to their work.

“I condemn this cold-blooded murder in the strongest possible terms. I urge the police to leave no stone unturned in finding the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

“The long arms of the law must reach out and arrest this recent trend of ‘targeted killings’ on individuals or officials who are seen to be fighting crime or corruption,” he told Malaysiakini.

The MCA central committee member said the nation must have zero tolerance for such crimes.

“Justice must be done and be seen to be done. Otherwise, such killers or killings will be more rampant and courageous,” he added.

Political differences aside, Ti said all must stand united in ensuring that those who champion the cause of the people must not fall victim to such insidiousness.

“In fact, they should or ought to be guarded or protected.

“We must not allow these villainous elements to intimidate activists, for a nation gripped with fear would never advance,” he added.

Kayong was shot dead in broad daylight at a busy intersection. His assailant is believed to have used a shotgun.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar revealed that a special team has been set up to investigate the incident.
