Perlis Umno supports decision to sack Muhyiddin, Mukhriz

Perlis Umno fully supports the decision by the party's supreme council to sack its former deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah liaison chief Mukhriz Mahathir.

The council last Friday also suspended vice-president Shafie Apdal's membership in the party.

Perlis Umno chief Shahidan Kassim said Perlis Umno was forced to make the decision, "as Muhyiddin and Mukhriz had helped to campaign for the opposition in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar parliamentary by-elections".

"Umno cannot compromise because former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin and and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz had breached party discipline," Shahidan told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri contributions to party members in the Kangar, Arau and Padang Besar divisions in Kangar last night.

Shahidan who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said Perlis Umno would also use Barisan Nasional's success template in the recent by-elections to select its candidates in the next general election.

He said it was an important criterion for a candidate to be able to effectively serve the people.

"Leaders are selected not for a small cluster or group of people but for the population. It's the norm when decisions we make are objected to, but we follow the majority view," Shahidan said.

He stressed that Perlis would not accept any parachute candidate in future general elections as it had been among the reasons for the poor performance of representatives in serving the people.

"Perlis is facing political umbrage because the parachute candidates chosen by 'unseen forces' have left the people disenchanted with their service performance.

"I am serious in this matter and will ensure that it will not be repeated," he said, adding that he would meet with the representatives concerned to let them know that the party president was aware of it.

Shahidan also advised representatives who wanted to be selected again as candidates to improve their performance and prove their worth.
