Citizens’ Declaration perhaps? Umno portal’s dollop of sarcasm

A pro-Umno portal has peppered the court case involving Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng with liberal doses of sarcasm.

Among others, MyKMU.net said the opposition might embark on a Citizens' Declaration to be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to "save" the DAP leader.

This was an obvious swipe at the declaration against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak endorsed by both Guan Eng and his father Lim Kit Siang.

According to the portal, Guan Eng would remain innocent unless the Federal Court decides otherwise.

"Why the Federal Court?

"Because it is certain the decision of the lower courts will not placate Pakatan Harapan, they will appeal to the highest court of the land. This is the normal thing they practice," it said.

Therefore, the portal predicted that the case might drag on for a protracted period, perhaps extending to more than a year.

"Perhaps there will be a lawyer who suddenly falls sick or perhaps there is a security guard at the court which DAP wants to change," it added.

This was a jibe at the applications to recuse judges from hearing a case.

The portal noted that the law of the land considered a person innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, requiring concrete evidence before someone is sent to prison.

"Apart from this, Pakatan Harapan is known for its line-up of lawyers skilled in manipulating cases. The slightest of mistake by the prosecution could see Guan Eng leaping with joy...

"The question is - can Guan Eng escape this scandal... Are his lawyers better than those of (former Selangor menteri besar) Dr Mohd Khir (Toyo)?

"Will justice be served in this case? How many years (in prison)?

"To be united in the VVIP cell in the Sungai Buloh prison?" it asked in reference to jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
