Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah has met with Tambun Umno members to address his sudden resignation as Finance Minister II and from all his party positions.

Umno Tambun deputy chief Aminuddin Md Hanafiah confirmed the meeting with Husni, who is the MP for Tambun in Ipoh, took place on Wednesday night.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Aminuddin said in the context of the Tambun constituency, Husni felt it was time for him to move on, ahead of the next general election.

"For Tambun, Husni believes that it is time for the process of change to take place, just as he had planned for the coming general election," he said.

However, Aminuddin was coy when asked whether Husni explained why he had resigned from the government and other party posts.

"In the context of Tambun, Umno and BN in Tambun will surely feel his absence, but as Tambun MP, he will continue to serve in that capacity," Aminuddin said.

Previously, Tambun Umno had been in the dark over Husni's resignation and had been wanting to seek clarification from Husni, who also headed the constituency's Umno division until his resignation.

On Monday, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who announced the cabinet reshuffle, said Husni decided to resign as Finance Minister II.

Husni, through his political secretary also announced that he was resigning as Umno and BN treasurer, Perak Umno deputy chairperson, Perak BN deputy chairperson, Umno Tambun division chief and Tambun BN parliamentary chairperson.

Yesterday, Utusan Malaysia quoted Husni as requesting that people respect his decision but he did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure.

'Let me rest'

"I have retired from all positions. Let me rest. Please respect my wishes, thank you," he is quoted saying.

In Kuala Lumpur last night, Umno supreme council member Ismail Sabri Yaakob called on all parties to stop speculating over the resignation of Husni from the cabinet and from all posts in Umno.

The public should give Husni space to make the right decision about his future, Bernama quoted Ismail saying.

"We have to respect his (Husni’s) decision and do not spread speculation about his resignation.

"I am not sure where he is and only knew about his resignation via his political secretary, who posted it on social media sites," Ismail said at a 'Syukur Ramadan, Raikan Syawal' event with the media.
