Penang DAP ends donation drive, RM1m target achieved

Unafraid: The speed at which the Lim Guan Eng (LGE) fund reached its RM1 million target is proof that a good majority of the rakyat are behind LGE and utterly disgusted with the selective prosecution of the Penang CM.

Clearly there is huge a political overtone in the case with the attorney-general (AG) personally leading the prosecution.

The obvious answer is that it involves an opposition leader and here is a chance to put away one of Najib's thorns in the flesh once and for all.

The rakyat sees this as grossly unfair as the same AG turned a blind eye to the RM2.6 billion that has yet to be accounted for.

FellowMalaysian: What an achievement – within hours, even collecting a humble sum of RM10 each, the target of RM1 million was reached quickly.

Having seen the persecution and the injustice done against LGE, the public was quick to respond in showing their abhorrence at the prosecution authorities who were made to carry out acts of evil misdeeds of the ruling regime against leaders of opposition parties.

Gunnerrun: Guan Eng, congrats on the success of this fundraising exercise.

I may not lay down my life for you or the rest fighting for the country to be great again, be ultimately free of all its evil ways brought on by the grand intimidators of the day who are solely responsible for the never-ending bullying and terrorising of the minorities, but I sure as heck know that you and your comrades will, when push comes to shove.

After all, we have witnessed it first hand with your previous jailing. Bravo bro, stay the course.

Vijay47: In the larger scheme of things, RM1 million is not big potatoes, PM’s wife Rosmah Mansor spends much more in a single regal flick of finger.

But what must have terrified Umno, emboldened by their recent wins in Sarawak, Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar, and lulled by their belief that the non-Malays and especially the Chinese were deserting DAP and the opposition in droves, is the fact that in a matter of hours, the required bail amount was raised.

And this was raised from contributors who were not promised anything, not given bags of rice, but driven and concerned by Umno becoming a bigger and more frightful monster.

But Umno did not create a hero in Guan Eng, he was always a monument in the eyes of the people, right from the distant past where he lost five years of his liberty for defending a helpless 15-year-old girl, the victim of an alleged statutory rape by an Umno leader.

No doubt Umno's think-tank will be rushing back to the drawing board, but remember, bribes, pledges, and lavish dinners do not always bring home the bacon. Yes, bring on GE14.

CucuMalaysia: Malaysians are generally reasonable people. They want honest and just leaders, not those who rob the country to enrich themselves and their cronies.

The response to this appeal shows that the rakyat (except those who are still sleeping) are very much concerned with the direction the country is heading.

Anonymous 759201436321741: What can I say? Perhaps this is the most miscalculated move by the ‘ketuanan’ leaders. They have now made LGE a national hero. The law of unintended consequence, that's what it is.

Rupert16: DAP should continue with the donation drive. I am sure it could have easily reached RM2.8 million, with the balance of RM1.8 million as payment for LGE's bungalow.

Anonymous 1890491455255851: It is indeed horrifying what AG Mohamed Apandi Ali represents.

While I disagree with the 'you resign, I resign' approach, there is something to say about the obvious direction of selective prosecution being conducted by this much ashamed AG.

And then to say he will lead the protection is even more telling. He cannot be acting on his own wisdom (which he may never have had) or desire to achieve justice.

He has not shown to be such a man. Instead, he is one of the pawns who has brought this office to its lowest levels. That, he will carry as his legacy.

Oxymoronictendencies: Apandi has never been interested in the public interest.

He has shown that time and again. He is purely a puppet undertaking Najib's instructions. He is a disgrace to the office he holds.

Shame on you, Apandi. Whilst Apandi's predecessor, Abdul Gani Patail, was no angel, at least he understood and respected the obligations and responsibilities of his office

In future, don't pretend to be neutral and speak on behalf of rakyat. Be honest, just say you are pro-Pakatan Harapan.

Anonyxyz: Here is the difference between one legally trained expert weighing the principle of fairness and justice against NGO leaders who may not be that knowledgeable.

Such leaders are like the PAS hudud law which is against a person who steal a piece of bread or the judge who "bravely" sentenced a poor mother to few months’ jail for taking a tin of milk for her starving child.

Anticonmen: When so-called leaders themselves do not follow the rules, conventions and the law, you have the right not to follow the rules.

Uragt: Guan Eng has to take leave if his presence impedes investigations. That stage has passed.

He has to take leave now ... to attend court.
