Azmin caught between the devil and the deep blue sea
YOURSAY | ‘His play with PAS is a pain for the Chinese, but a good political move for the Malays.'
'Azmin can do more to improve rating among Chinese'
Anonymous #33227154: Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali is seen as one who could not be trusted as he works with PAS rather than with Parti Amanah Negara.
PAS has shown itself to be a racist and extremist party and is working with Umno. Despite knowing this, Azmin still chooses to support PAS.
It shows that Azmin has no principles and cannot be trusted. One day, he may work with Umno too.
Fairnsquare: PAS during former Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim's time was moderate and won seats in Selangor with Chinese support.
Their change to radicalism with its insistence on the hudud agenda has panicked the Chinese and clearly cost them their support.
This is reflected in poorer support for Azmin. Azmin has to move away from PAS if Selangor is to make further inroads into Selangor. Amanah is the alternative.
Headhunter: PAS has been a millstone that hangs around Azmin's neck. If he can get rid of it, he'll gain more traction with the Chinese.
Having said that, I think he's caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, because without PAS support, he'll lose a big chunk of votes.
Looking at the whole scenario, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is the biggest spanner in the works.
Even PAS itself suffers from huge damage because of him. He's no tok guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat for sure.
Sarawakian: Azmin's popularity dipped because of his interaction with PAS, which made people doubt his agenda.
But as a staunch opposition supporter, I can understand his moves. I only pray a miracle will happen and our Muslim brothers in PAS will see the light.
We should distinguish between the leaders and the party. The opposition should interact with the right-minded people who oppose corruption and abuse of power, even in PAS and Umno if such people exist.
It is immature and short-sighted to antagonise the entire party because of the leaders.
If Malaysia is to be saved, all right-minded people regardless of party affiliations, race, or religion must close ranks.
Just a Malaysian: The writer is right. The Chinese see a stand on principles as important, while the Malays are likely more flexible in that aspect.
Azmin's play with PAS is a pain for the Chinese, but a good political move for the Malays.
No-brainer: The perception of Chinese on Azmin is pretty much influenced by DAP leaders via both mainstream and social media.
DAP leaders like Superman Hiew (Kuan Yau), who has constantly attacked Azmin for working with PAS, conveniently omitted the fact the DAP leaders in Selangor are also working with PAS.
Hence, DAP has the responsibility to explain to the Chinese why DAP is still working with PAS in Selangor, under the leadership of Azmin.
The Analyser: While you keep on thinking of the Chinese as a separate class of people, then you are guaranteed to fail. But haven't you already failed?
Tkosong: Why are they still doing things along racial lines? Across the board, government pensioners aged 60 and above would most likely be BN supporters.
BR1M recipients would also be BN supporters. People who do business from government contracts would also probably be supporting BN.
How to make Azmin's ratings higher in Selangor? For starters, he could do more for the OKU (orang kurang upaya, disabled) community. Azmin would get more support if he does more for students and education.
The Selangor government and exco for education and welfare have neglected and have not done anything, and have not come up with new state policies regarding education and the OKU at all.
Pemerhati: Azmin is making the same mistake that Khalid made by trumpeting from time to time that Selangor has RM4 billion in savings. What use is so much money in the banks?
It should instead be spent for the benefit of the people. That would not only impress the people but also make them vote for the Harapan government again.
If the people see that there is no significant difference between the BN and Harapan governments, they might decide to bring BN back after Najib feeds them with a few of his 'American pies'.
That would make PM Najib Razak very happy and he would be very grateful to Azmin for leaving him with 1,000 American pies.
Basically: Everyone has forgotten, even if Najib calls snap polls this year, Selangor can choose not to have its state election. That choice belongs to Harapan.
They can choose to hold off till the end of the term.
