Based on his track record, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will shoot down his deputy's call for a ceasefire between opposition parties, said an Umno supreme council member.

Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said that Hadi's history of vetoing Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man all but guaranteed that the PAS number two's plan of uniting the opposition to defeat BN would fail.

"I don't see it as PAS' official stand. It is just the deputy president’s stand, it would be difficult for it to become the party's stand," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

"I don't think there will be comments from other PAS leaders agreeing with such a view. Because history has proven that many of the deputy president's views have been rejected by the president," he added.

Yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim mooted a ceasefire between PAS and Pakatan Harapan, and urged the parties to band together to topple the ruling coalition.

He said that PAS and Pakatan Harapan, which comprises DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara, must compromise with one another without betraying their respective policies.

However, Shamsul said this would not happen as the four had always failed to see eye-to-eye due to their differing ideologies.

"I do not see that as a solution or that the ceasefire would truly happen.

"I also do not see them uniting because the differences between them are too big, there is no meeting point. Their ideologies are different, their goals are different.

"These differences make it difficult for them to unite, but I am sure the rakyat can judge for themselves," he added.

Yesterday, PAS vice-president Iskandar Abdul Samad had expressed support for Tuan Ibrahim's call for a ceasefire.

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali welcomed Tuan Ibrahim’s statement and said that at least an electoral pact should be formed between PAS and Pakatan Harapan parties to avoid damaging multi-cornered fights.

DAP, too, welcomed the proposal but PAS splinter party Amanah questioned if Tuan Ibrahim was speaking for the Islamist party.
