Here are the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

Failed coup in Turkey

An attempted Turkish military coup crumbled in the early hours of yesterday morning after crowds answered President Tayyip Erdogan's call to take to the streets to support him.


Forces loyal to the government arrested 1,563 members of the armed forces in a purge ordered by Erdogan after the failed coup which left at least 90 dead, 1,000 injured, and the Turkish parliament building damaged in the fighting.

The final tally lists a total of 265 people killed during the attempted coup, among them 161 government forces and civilians as mopping up measures continue, and Erdogan dismissed 2,745 judges from Turkey's top judicial body HSYK claiming judicial links to the coup.

IS claims responsibility for Nice attack

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the truck attack on the French Riviera city of Nice as the nation's police arrested three people there in connection with the carnage that claimed the lives of at least 84 people.

On the local front the United Kingdom's travel advisory for Malaysia now makes mention of the Puchong grenade attack which Malaysian police classified as a terrorist attack, warning of the high threat from terrorism with indiscriminate attacks possible at places visited by foreigners.

Meanwhile Taoist 'hell money' makes its appearance in Malaysian politics as symbolic weapons of political 'terror' used to deliver threats and protests to opponents telling them to "go to hell".

Pairin snipes 'vindictive' Dr M

Sabah deputy chief minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan took a shot at former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying the latter would stop at nothing to end his enemies, calling Mahathir a 'political animal' who would stop at nothing to dislodge anyone he dislikes.

Sacked Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin said he agrees with the proposal for a truce among opposition parties, so that they can work together to prepare for the next general election. He also expressed support for Mahathir's proposed new party and an opposition grand coalition.
