Former Selangor menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim has expressed doubt that the new opposition coalition can resolve problems plaguing the country’s opposition parties.

This is because the proposed coalition – said to comprise PKR, DAP, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) as well as former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's soon-to-be-formed party – has no clear principles apart from aiming to oust certain groups within the government, he said.

“They cannot solve whatever problems they are facing through this. This is because as we can see, Amanah has its own stand, PKR has separate principles and DAP is working towards another direction.

“There may be some common agenda but there are also many big disparities within the group,” Khalid was quoted as saying by English daily The Star at his Hari Raya open house yesterday.

The Independent Bandar Tun Razak lawmaker said the pact has yet to provide a clear framework for the rakyat and its formation was only discussed between leaders for the interest of certain groups.

“I think they are not in harmony. I hope this political trend can be reduced as the rakyat are already tired of the never-ending political developments,” he added.

The former PKR leader’s remarks were in response to Mahathir, who announced the formation of a new party and grand coalition following a meeting with opposition and civil society leaders in Putrajaya last Thursday.

Meanwhile, when asked if he would join the coalition, Khalid reportedly said it was unlikely as his political career ended after he held the Selangor menteri besar post.

“I want to focus my efforts on other work, especially in helping and promoting Islam in the region,” he was quoted as saying.
