Number of flood victims increases to 409 in Kedah

The number of flood victims in Kedah rose to 409 at seven evacuation centres in operation compared with 179 this morning while three were closed at noon today.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat Major Imran Azemi said the victims were from 101 families in two districts, Kuala Muda and Yan.

In Yan, flood victims relocated to Kampung Teroi Bukit surau remained at 100 while 38 were housed at the Titi Teras mosque and 10 more in the Nurul Huda 18th mile surau.

In Kuala Muda, 217 victims were placed at the Keda hall and Kampung Tepi Sungai surau while in Kampung Batu 5 Jalan Jeniang surau (22), Kampung Sungai Rotan surau (12) and Kampung Guar Stesen surau (10).

"The three evacuation centres closed were Kampung Seputeh surau and Kampung Tawar surau in Baling and Kampung Lubuk Boi surau in Yan, since water level subsided this morning," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Yan Welfare Department officer Roslan Ishak said flood victims were supplied with essential items such as blankets, mats, food as well as disaster kits.

"We hope parties or non-governmental organisations that intend to distribute assistance and contributions, can coordinate their efforts with us to avoid duplication," he said.

Yan police chief DSP Muhamad Halim Yatim said 99 personnel from police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, Health Department, District Office as well as Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) were on duty in the affected areas.

"Police will step up security surveillance and patrol in the areas, especially at night, to ensure there are no thefts at houses affected by floods.

"We are also prepared if the situation worsens," he said.
