The police will question Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun on his report alleging a high-level plot to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the government.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar told Malaysiakini this when asked under what section the report is being investigated.

“We need to interview the complainant first (before deciding on the classification),” Khalid said.

“Since it is a serious allegation, involving prominent individuals, we must determine what prompted him to make the report, and if he can provide evidence to substantiate his allegation,” he added.

In his police report filed yesterday, Khairul Azwan (photo) named recently retired Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, outgoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Abu Kassim Mohamed and former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail.

He said the three were suspected of providing confidential information to foreign agencies, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), without authorisation.

Khairul Azwan also alleged that some of the documents submitted were falsified and the information twisted to achieve their agenda.

The report came in the wake of the US Department of Justice filing civil suits related to the alleged abuse of 1MDB funds, which contained a slew of damning claims.

Bank Negara and MACC, together with the police, were part of a special task force investigating the 1MDB and RM2.6 billion political donation issues.

Last July, Gani was taken off his post, on health grounds, igniting accusations that it was an attempt to derail the task force’s investigation, which the government denied.

His removal followed explosive reports on the 1MDB scandal by The Wall Street Journal and whistleblower website Sarawak Report.

Gani’s successor Mohamed Apandi Ali later cleared Najib of any wrongdoing.

The prime minister has denied abusing public funds for personal gain and blamed such allegations on his mentor-turned-nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad and those purportedly engineering his downfall.

Last night, Zeti said she was seeking legal counsel on the Umno Youth leader’s report, whereas Gani described it as a publicity stunt.

Meanwhile, Abu Kassim told reporters that he would issue a statement on the matter today.
