Bersih 5 is on, rally to push for action on 1MDB cases

FellowMalaysian: I commend Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah for her courage and resolve, in the name and interest of Malaysians who value transparency, good governance and accountability, to lead Bersih 5.

Bersih 5 will be a rude wake-up call to the authorities, ruling government and the enforcement agencies and it is hoped that the rally will jolt them from their long slumber, into taking action over the 1MDB scandal.

The entire country has now been gripped and engulfed with a suffocating sense of despair, loss and hopelessness over the refusal and reluctance by government bodies and institutions to take actions over the damning claims made in the US Department of Justice's court filings two weeks ago.

The authorities must now be made to realise that pretence and denials will not keep the truth from being told.

Adam Ningau: Premier Najib Abdul Razak doesn't seem to be concerned about who is MO1, despite this being the person who allegedly siphoned millions of ringgit from his beloved 1MDB.

Yes, we need Bersih 5, and we want Najib out.

Gusnargh: Another rally in the city? I'm doubtful this will achieve anything other than turning central Kuala Lumpur into a massive parking lot for a day. We've done this four times already and has anything substantially changed?

Going out into the streets of Kuala Lumpur is preaching to the converted. It hasn't worked in four rallies, a fifth is not going to work. Bersih, you need to change your strategy.

HaveAGreatDay: Yes, the detractors will say nothing will come out of the rally.

So be it, but the rakyat who are disgusted with the 'daylight robbery' of our nation's coffers, must make known their feelings to 'Malaysian Official 1' (MO1). He can't take all the rakyat for fools.

Doc: Najib will be happy too. He will be able to show off his new dictatorial powers through the National Security Council Act.

Bersih may have a rough ride trying to organise Bersih 5 and can expect heighten harassment from this new NSC entity, which Najib has created to cling on to power, and also from the inspector-general of police (IGP) and the attorney-general (AG).

Hence, it is crucial that all Malaysians, and I really mean all Malaysians, to come out to support Bersih 5, come rain or shine or harassment by the police or Umno.

The fight for Malaysia's survival starts today, and will continue till the forces of this political evil are defeated.

Gordon Gecko: For me, Bersih 5 would be a lost cause and a waste of time if the protesters are from the usual suspects - opposition leaders, urban Chinese, Indians and Malays. Frankly, Najib wouldn't give a damn.

Anonymous 228861441355216: This exercise will be seen as a Chinese organised rally. It does no good other than preaching the same thing to the majority, who already know Malaysian Official 1 is guilty.

More needs to be done to bring about awareness and understanding amongst the rural folks. I'm afraid Bersih 5, if staged in Kuala Lumpur, will instead bring about more fragmentation of our society, than achieve its aims.

Spinnot: In my opinion, Bersih 5 is a waste of time if it is attended mainly by non-Malays.

N1: Indeed, they should call off Bersih 5 if they cannot mobilise the Malays.

Victor Johan: Now, many 'Sherlock Holmes' will be out on the streets, in the cities, towns and rural areas, asking and looking for 'Malaysian Official 1'. The police should act professionally and aid this endeavour.

Anything short, the police chief and his force will be deemed as abetting this MO1, and his/her scoundrels, in their efforts to cheat Malaysians.

RR: Bersih organisers should be on guard for mischief makers, especially Umno red shirts, who will turn the whole rally into a riot, to help the NSC declare an emergency. That would be the end of everything.

Fairman: Please stop holding the rally in Kuala Lumpur only. You will just be preaching to the converted.

Just concentrate on free and fair elections and target the Election Commission and its commissioners. Leave the job of asking Najib to step down to the opposition.

After all, 51 percent voted the opposition. Let the people demand their MPs to ask Najib to vacate his office. Then the IGP cannot say such a rally is illegal.

IGP: Follow the law, and police will facilitate Bersih 5

Nil: Yes, Bersih 5 should give the IGP Khalid Abu Bakar the chance to do his job. Give him all that he wants. Then make sure that all participants behave.

Really, to succeed, Bersih 5 would need to have the full cooperation of the IGP and his men.

Hang Babeuf: The IGP must be held to his word on this. Strictly and completely.

Thana55: What law? One law for Umno and another law for the opposition. It's a 'Speedy Gonzales' investigation when it comes to the opposition, but a 'slow loris' one when it comes to Umno.

Double standards. Sort that out first. The rakyat is not stupid.
