With the increase in chronic diseases, more men in the country are expected to face sexual health problems, says Dr Shaiful Bahari Ismail.

The head of Department for Family Medicine, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian said among the sexual and reproductive problems included premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome and infertility which were caused by their own actions.

He said this was the result of men's attitude in not obtaining scheduled treatment from hospitals, especially for chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, high cholesterol and obesity - linked closely to men's sexual complications.

"In a study carried out in 2005, it was found that smoking contributed directly to sexual problems, with 48 per cent of men in the country facing sexual issues," added Dr Shaiful Bahari.

Speaking to reporters after the launch of his book entitled, 'Masalah Seksual Lelaki Dalam Kesejahteraan Suami Isteri' at HUSM Kubang Kerian today, he said with the increase in chronic diseases, he also expected a rise in sexual problem cases.

However, this had yet to be supported by current data, he said, urging that the issue be addressed to ensure good marital ties.
