Barisan Nasional's third largest component MIC will become the first political party in the country to embrace a key performance indicator to gauge its leaders' performance, its president S Samy Vellu announced today.

Under the system, every organ and leader in the party would have goals and targets to achieve.

The MIC president was quoted in a Bernama report as saying the goals and targets would be measured and documented in the performance executive forms and evaluated periodically by him.

Leadership and management training for more than 4,900 branch leaders throughout the country would be conducted. The first station has been fixed for Perlis.

"The objective of the training programme would be for leaders to understand that they are servants, and not bosses, as propagated by our Prime Minister (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) who says 'work with me and not work for me," he said after opening the 59th Perlis MIC Convention.

Open a new chapter

Samy Vellu, who is also the works minister believed that the programme could create more thinkers, planners, doers and winners at all levels of the party.

"More importantly, the programme would reinvent the MIC and open a new chapter in the management of the party," he added.

He said the direction of the party's management would be on the philosophy of MIC Incorporated enshrining performance management and leadership development.

Last year, the prime minister told government backbenchers to submit a report card every three months, which was also meant to gauge their performance.
