The Lawas Fire and Rescue Department today carried out a special operation to remove mercury spill at the storeroom of the Lawas Community Health Rehabilitation Centre’s health development section in Lawas, Limbang.

Mustapa Juni, who led the operation, said the spill was discovered by a nurse who was transferring items inside the storeroom.

“The nurse suddenly saw mercury spillage from the blood pressure measuring instrument on a table at the storeroom and immediately quarantined the room,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

He said the department received a call at 11am and took about 30 minutes to conduct the cleaning up operation at 11.04 am.

For the record, the mercury spill is the fourth to have occurred in Lawas so far this year.
