PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Mat said today his party is awaiting a formal invitation for them to participate in the Bersih 5 rally.

"We're waiting for the invitation," he told journalists after the party's central committee meeting at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

As such, Tuan Ibrahim said the matter was not raised during the meeting today.

"We have yet to discuss it. We aren't even sure if Bersih 5 is going to happen," he said.

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah on Aug 3 announced that the Bersih 5 rally will take place following the US Department of Justice's revelation that more than US$3.5 billion had purportedly been stolen from 1MDB.

However, details of the rally, including when and where it will be held, have yet to be announced.

Maria in an interview with Malaysiakini this week said Bersih was in the process of reaching out to PAS.

PAS' participation is crucial as the party is capable of mobilising the Malay heartland.

The last Bersih rally on Aug 29 saw a lacklustre turnout among the Malay community, attributed to PAS' decision not to mobilise its members.

Critics used this to attack the rally as being "Chinese", turning it into a racial issue.

The Bersih 4 rally drew over 100,000 people as they demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over his handling of 1MDB and the multi-billion deposits in his personal bank accounts.

Najib had denied wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain.
