The decision to award life pensions of RM3,000 a month to Olympic silver medalists Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong has prompted a police report by a disgruntled retired armed personnel.

Rozzeli Pin said the contributions of security force personnel who risk their lives to safeguard the nation far exceeds that of the athletes who "only dived from a plank".

"I am a retired army personnel. Many fought for this country, armed personnel and police officers including who lose their legs (while serving in United Nationa peacekeeping missions) in Lebanon...why don't they get life pensions?

"Even those who jump from the sky with parachutes don't get lifetime pensions, yet those who dive from a plank are said to have glorified Malaysia and receive pensions.

"The dive does not commesurate with the pensions they're receiving," he told Malaysiakini.

Rozzeli lodged a police report over the matter at the Gurun police station after reading news that the diving duo will receive lifetime pensions.

They came in second behind China in synchronised diving in the 10 meter platform category last week. It was Malaysia's first medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

They will share a reward of RM300,000 and lifetime pensions of RM3,000 each per month.

Rozzeli in his police report urged the government to reconsider the decision to award lifetime pensions but said a one-time reward is acceptable.

He said he lodged a police report to protest the matter, because he does not want to be investigated under the Sedition Act if he raised the issue using different means.

"As citizens, we have to speak out using the proper channels," he said.
