May Anwar’s birthday next year be celebrated outside Sg Buloh

YOURSAY | ‘Free Anwar? It can only happen if the opposition wins the key to Putrajaya.’

Ambiga: A united opposition the 'best present' for Anwar

Proarte: Let us not overplay former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's importance. Anwar is unable to disabuse himself from political Islam and this is the brick wall towards achieving a plural democracy.

Anwar's politics always has had a subtext of 'Ketuanan Islam dan Melayu’ and this was the cause of Pakatan being unstable.

What held Pakatan together was the rakyat's desire for change and the Pakatan component parties desire for power. Anwar showed no leadership role over the unconstitutional hudud, over the ‘Allah’ controversy and over Lina Joy's right to freedom of worship.

He had nothing to say about the unilateral conversion to Islam of Hindu children allegedly abetted by the courts by denying the Hindu spouse and children their rights under civil jurisdiction. In short, Anwar is an unprincipled politician who failed because of this.

With regard to Anwar being the vital 'glue' which kept Pakatan together, let us not forget that PAS spurned him and rejected his plea to support Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as menteri besar of Selangor.

He was humiliated by PAS so let us not delude ourselves over Anwar's influence.

HaveAGreatDay: Proarte, you are spot on. Yet let us not ignore the fact that he led the now defunct Pakatan Rakyat to garner more popular votes than the Umnoputras in the 13th general election (GE13).

Free Anwar? It can only happen if the opposition wins the key to Putrajaya.

National Human Rights Society (Hakam) president Ambiga Sreenevasan is right - we need a united opposition; but just look at the squabbling going on between DAP and PKR. Never mind PAS, it has allegedly been fed too much ‘dedak’ (animal feed) by Malaysian Official 1 (MO1).

But that means a whole new ball game in the rural hinterlands - can Amanah and that new party on the block (Bersatu) make sufficient inroads to the Umnoputras’ safe deposit areas to make a difference? I am not optimistic.

New Dawn: Like it or not, without a united opposition, there is little hope in dislodging Umno. Pakatan without rural-based PAS needs the cooperation of Bersatu.

Clever Voter: Anwar was our best hope. He will no longer be that. The next generation of politicians must step up.

We now have more divisions. Put aside ego and work with former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad to bring about the change, please.

Happy birthday, Saudara Anwar. Remember the good people of this nation will always stand by you and your family. Be brave, be tough, be vigilant and be safe, for we need you back in good hands.

And please tell Wan Azizah that the drains along Jalan Bukit Kajang in front of the Christian cemetery ‘masih sumbat’.

There is a need to attend to the matter urgently for they are causing flooding and I have reported this to the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKJ) 1,000 times over the last two years, and no action has been taken.

Hidup Rakyat: I agree with Ambiga. There is strength in unity. So far, Anwar is the best uniting factor for the opposition bloc.

Anonymous Hotplate: Keep up the spirit, opposition parties. Talks must be organised to win the trust and confidence of the kampung folk and vote for the opposition parties to bring a change in government.

Don't condemn anyone, just leave the alleged thieves to Allah.

Allforit: Happy birthday, Anwar. May all your sacrifices and efforts see fruition soonest.

Supporters celebrate Anwar's birthday outside Sg Buloh Prison

FellowMalaysian: Many, including me, feel strongly against Anwar's harsh incarceration and the injustice administered to bring him down.

Anwar still remains very much our beacon of hope and inspiration and all true Malaysians look towards the day when he is released.

In the meantime, we will keep the fire burning and may your birthday wish come true. Happy birthday, Anwar.

No-Brainer: Brother Anwar, it was undisputedly clear that you were a political victim. Your powerful political enemies had to put you away because you were a thorn in their flesh. You were their obstacle to their alleged grand robbery plans.

Whatever it was, brother, you have to remain healthy, strong and focused on your missions to unite all Malaysians and to eradicate corruption, abuse of power and nepotism in the country.

I wish you good health and may Allah always bless you and your family.

Cogito Ergo Sum: May your next birthday be celebrated outside Sungai Buloh. Like Nelson Mandela, your incarceration will make the people more resolved and united against evil oppression.

Anonymous 1607021442717254: He who fights for the country is in jail while those who have the power to improve our nation are either allegedly stealing from it or doing nothing about it.
