A PKR lawmaker has blasted Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah for accusing foreign countries of intervening in Malaysia's administration to topple its leader.

Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung wanted to know what Ahmad Bashah was referring to when he made the “utterly shameful” remarks yesterday.

"What foreign interference is Ahmad Bashah referring to that has been taken to undermine our country’s choice of its government and its leaders?

"He should not just make empty and baseless accusations without facts,” said Gooi, who is also Kedah PKR deputy chief.

Ahmad Bashah yesterday had said that he did not want any “foreign element” to determine the country's future leaders and to take over what the government had developed.

"The people must look at the problem because many allegations had been made by the foreign countries aimed at toppling the leader," Ahmad Bashah was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Gooi asked if the Kedah MB was referring to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuits to seize some US$1 billion worth of assets in the US bought with "stolen money" from 1MDB.

He further queried if the MB’s allegation was an admission that the 'Malaysian Official 1' referred to in the DOJ court documents was none other than Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

DOJ had claimed that US$681 million of 1MDB funds wound up in the bank accounts of Malaysian Official 1.

Gooi also took note of criminal investigations currently underway in at least 10 countries, including the US, involving money laundering and banking laws which had been broken in those countries.

The probes concerned suspected stolen funds from 1MDB, which had allegedly been laundered overseas.

Gooi said the investigations did not constitute interfering in Malaysia’s domestic affairs.

"In fact, our nation should thank and welcome these foreign investigations in doing the good work in unveiling the grand conspiracy to defraud and steal from our nation.

"In which our own enforcement agencies should have, but totally failed to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the crimes committed," said the PKR supreme council member.

"The only hidden agenda the Malaysian people are infuriated about, is with the Umno leadership’s cover ups, denials and coming into defense of those who have abused their public trust and position by stealing billions from the people of Malaysia in connection with 1MDB, " he added.

Gooi said Ahmad Bashah's latest remarks follow a string of similar recent comments by top Umno leaders to deflect the serious revelations made in the recent US case.

Gooi also expressed regret that Ahmad Bashah had chosen the opening of the Kedah state assembly meeting to "score political points" by coming to his boss’s defence in the 1MDB scandal.

"He did that instead of addressing important issues affecting Kedah, such as the glaring water crisis faced in Kedah, " said Gooi.
