'Sarawak Report editor should worry about UK, not M'sia'

Instead of worrying about the Malaysian economy and other supposed problems, Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown should worry about the economic free-fall of her country, said an Umno-linked portal.

"As a citizen that is very 'sensitive' to the economic situation of the country and its people, Sarawak Report owner Rewcastle-Brown should be more concerned about the UK, before Malaysia.

"Her own country is torn and falling apart, free-falling down the graphs. Be more concerned about the UK first. Don't meddle in another country which is doing better that your own," hit out MyKMU.net.

Rewcastle-Brown, argued the portal, should look in the mirror first and look to her own country before attacking Malaysia.

"If she is truly brave enough to meddle in our affairs, she should visit us. I am sure the police will be waiting with love-letters titled 'arrest warrants' for her," said the portal.

Arguing to prove its point, MyKMU referred to the ratio between national debt and GDP in the last 10 years between 2006 to 2015 for Malaysia, which has risen from 41.5 percent to 54 percent.

In contrast, the portal compared this to the UK's debt to GDP ratio within the same time period, which rose from 42.4 percent to a whopping 89.2 percent in 2015.

At the same time, MyKMU also noted that the pound sterling has shrunk in value, compared to the ringgit from RM7.14 per pound in 2007 to RM5.15 per pound to date.

All this, said the portal, is proof that things in Malaysia are not as bad as the UK, arguing that it was weird that some 'social media economist" said Malaysia will be bankrupt, while being cavalier about the UK's mounting debt.

Currently, noted MyKMU, the GST in the UK is set to increase from 17 percent to 20 percent, while they already have the world highest unemployment and petrol prices.

And things are set to get worse in the fallout of the 'brexit' vote which analysts posited will cause a slowdown to the UK economy.

Militant movements

Socially speaking, claimed the portal, things in the UK are also getting worse, with militant movements and terror attacks targeting the country, threatening the safety and security of its people.

Rampant Islamophobia has also made it difficult for Muslims there, who have found themselves under questionable harassment.

Despite all this, the portal wondered why some Malaysians continue to look to the UK as an economic safe haven.

Crazier still, said the portal, are those that seem to worship the UK, while badmouthing their own government whilst the facts speaks otherwise.

"Are they speaking about facts or just making much ado about perception?" asked the portal.

Rewcastle-Brown who founded Sarawak Report was a vocal critic of Sarawak Governor Abdul Taib Mahmud, accusing the long-serving former chief minister of graft and misappropriating public funds. Taib has denied all wrongdoing.

Sarawak Report has also published exposes with regards to the international investigations into alleged money laundering and embezzlement in sovereign fund 1MDB, including implicating Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and those close to him.

Najib has denied criminal complicity and has been cleared by the authorities.

Rewcastle-Brown has been in the crosshairs of Najib loyalists, and Umno supporters, in her pursuit of the matter.
