National badminton champion Lee Chong Wei has denied the existence of an open letter supposedly written by his long-time rival from China, Lin Dan.

Responding to journalists' questions about the purported letter, he joked that they were not a pair of lovers to be passing letters to each other.

"There is none. I never received it. It is probably lies.

"I did not write it, neither did Lin Dan. Do you think that we are in love to be writing letters," he joked during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Bunga Raya Complex today.

A letter supposedly penned by Lin Dan went viral on social media after Chong Wei defeated his Chinese arch-rival in the men's singles badminton semi-finals during the Rio Olympics, last Friday.

According to the world number one shuttler, what seemed to be a heartwarming and touching letter, may have been the fabrication of Chinese journalists.

"There is no issue. The Chinese journalists (probably) wrote it themselves," he said, laughing.

While Chong Wei once again did not manage to obtain Olympic gold, he has at last laid to rest his Olympian nightmare of losing to Lin Dan in every Olympic match-up.

Chong Wei passed Lin Dan in the semis to reach the final in Rio, before putting up a valiant effort against Lin Dan's countryman Chen Long, who ultimately won the gold for China.
