Indonesian navy finds runaway oil tanker, crew

An oil tanker that went missing after being taken by its disgruntled Indonesian crew from a Malaysian port has been found, the Indonesian Navy said today.

The Indonesian-flagged Vier Harmoni and its crew were found by a navy search team in waters off Pulau Datok in West Kalimantan province, the navy said in a statement.

“An around-the-clock search for the tanker finally yielded results,” the statement said.

The tanker was carrying 900 kilo-litres of diesel worth US$392,700 when the crew diverted it to Indonesian waters while sailing from the port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia on Aug 15.

The navy said at that time that the crew ran away with the ship because of a dispute over pay with their employers.

The Indonesian company that operates the tanker, Vierlines Asia Group, has denied accusations that it had not paid the crew, local media reported.
