Hot on the heels of the state government, Penang Gerakan today demanded it take action against a DAP assemblyperson's father for allegedly taking money in return for public housing units.

State Gerakan acting chairperson Oh Tong Keong pointed out that 72 hours have passed since a video clip emerged, showing Lim Keat Seong with several individuals who claimed to have paid him cash in return for low-cost housing units.

The 68-year-old retiree is the father of DAP Sungai Pinang assemblyperson Lim Siew Khim, who has denied any involvement in the alleged housing scam and distanced herself from her father's dealings.

Oh told a press conference today that Siew Khim, whom he dubbed 'Uncle Lim', appeared to have disappeared amid silence from the state government over the case.

"There is also no clarification from the state government on the development of the case.

"If Uncle Lim has indeed received the money, who was it submitted to?

"Are there any other relatives of assemblypersons and MPs who are middlemen? " asked Oh, who is also the party's state vice-chairperson.

If others were involved, added Oh, the state government would surely lodge a police report on the matter.

Case under cops' purview

The five-minute video clip was uploaded on a pro-BN Facebook page, and showed Lim sitting in a coffee shop with several individuals demanding refunds as they had failed to obtain the promised houses.

Commenting on the video, state executive councillor on housing Jagdeep Singh Deo said on Tuesday that the case is under the police's purview.

Jagdeep urged victims of the purported housing scam to lodge police reports.

He had also asked them not to be duped by conmen claiming they can obtain units by paying bribes.

Meawhile, Oh today accused the state government of being afraid to form a commission of inquiry on the matter.

"If the state government is confident in its housing selection committee, and that there is no such thing as cutting queues to obtain houses, it should form a commission of inquiry, " Oh said.

"We will submit a compact disc to Penang Governor Abdul Rahman Abbas to urge him to look into the matter, " Oh added.

He said Gerakan will organise an anti-corruption program focusing on the housing scam to alert Penangites not to fall for the promises of middlemen.

He also urged the state government to reveal the list of all applicants who had successfully obtained low-cost or affordable housing units.
