The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today recorded a statement from a Penang state assemblyperson whose father is under investigation for alleged corruption involving the purchase of affordable homes in the state.

The assemblyperson was accompanied to the MACC office by lawyer Ram Karpal Singh and Seri Delima state assemblyperson RSN Rayer, who is also a lawyer.

Ram Karpal, when approached by reporters, said the process of recording the statement began at 10am and ended at 11.45am.

"The MACC had asked the assemblyman to have the statement recorded as a witness and not as a suspect and the latter extended full cooperation in the matter," he said.

Ram Karpal said the case was being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009.

The issue of the so-called bribe-for-home deals came to light last Monday after Penang Gerakan vice-chairperson Oh Tong Keong released a video clip which carried a recorded discussion on making a payment to get a state government house.

The MACC yesterday recorded a statement from the father of the assemblyperson and conducted a check at the home of the 68-year-old retiree.

The man was arrested last night and is being held under remand for seven days from today to assist in the investigation into the case.
