Khairy: Grand welcome for Paralympians who return on Sept 22

A grand welcome awaits the return of Malaysian heroes from the Rio Paralympics on Sept 22.

Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin today said the ceremony, to be attended by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, would be held at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

"This morning the matter was discussed by the cabinet and the prime minister will officially be present to welcome the return of our paralympians.

"It will be a big do. Wait for the surprise," he said when asked on possible gimmicks for the function.

Khairy said this during a function at Proton Center of Excellence in Subang Jaya to announce the company's appreciation for the Rio Olympic medallists.

Eight national athletes each received a Proton car, as earlier promised.

Last Sunday, Abdul Latif Romly bagged Malaysia's third gold medal at the Rio Paralympics after breaking the world record in the men's long jump T20 event. He broke the world record three times in the process.

The best distance the 19-year-old from Perlis was 7.6 metres.

Earlier that same day, Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi and Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli won gold in the 100m T36 event and men's shot put F20 event respectively.

During the ceremony, national shuttler Lee Chong Wei was presented with a Proton Perdana Premium for his victories in three Olympics since 2008 until 2016.
