The redelineation exercise in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur may see incumbent Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar of PKR losing due to an increase in police voters.

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng of DAP said at a press conference at Pusat Komuniti Manjalara this morning that this would be due to the heavy police polling district from Segambut being carved out into Lembah Pantai.

Lim said his constituency originally contains the Tasik Perdana polling district, in which most of the voters are Bukit Aman federal police headquarters personnel.

However, the Election Commission (EC) has proposed to move the 6,598 voters in Tasik Perdana to Lembah Pantai, a marginal seat won by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah in the last general election, he said.

Lim said although the redrawing would increase his own chances at the polls, it would come at a cost to Nurul Izzah.

“I lost more than 6,000 police votes in the last general election... this proves that the EC is collaborating with Umno, both of them think they can abandon Segambut.

"By removing my 6,000 police votes and throwing them into Nurul Izzah's constituency, she would lose 6,000 votes even before the general election commences," he said.

Lim added that if this number is combined with Lembah Pantai postal votes, she stands to lose more than 10,000 votes prior to polling day.

Segambut is seen as DAP's fortress, and in 2013 Lim crushed BN Gerakan candidate B.Jayanthi Devi by a 19,111-vote majority.

However, Nurul Izzah narrowly defended her Lembah Pantai seat with a razor thin 1,847-vote majority against BN-Umno's Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

Lim said placing Tasik Perdana into Lembah Pantai would help BN regain the seat.

Giving up opposition stronghold

He said Segambut would see three incoming polling districts - Tiong Nam, Kampung Semarang and Kolam Ayer after removing Tasik Perdana, as stated in the EC's proposal.

Originally located under the Bukit Bintang parliamentary seat, Tiong Nam and Kampung Semarang have 3,862 and 2,255 voters respectively while Kolam Ayer, originally under the Batu parliamentary seat, has 2,970 voters.

Lim admitted the move would be favourable to his chance of defending his seat and getting a third term as MP.

“On paper, it would not be so difficult for me in the next general election.”

Lim urged the EC to upload individual redrawn constituencies on the Internet to facilitate public inspection of the redrawn boundaries.

The EC has proposed to redraw the boundaries of 128 federal seats in the peninsula and Sabah, while retaining the current number of seats.

However, the move is being questioned for weakening the opposition's marginal seats to favour the BN, although it would benefit current opposition strongholds.

Yesterday, PKR Sri Andalas assemblyperson Dr Xavier Jeyakumar further accused the EC of diminishing racially-mixed seats and replacing them with Malay-majority seats in its latest redelineation exercise for Selangor.
