Ahmad Yaakob wants to remain as PAS deputy spiritual leader

PAS deputy spiritual leader Ahmad Yaakob who wants to remain in this post, has suggested that another eminent party figure be chosen to fill the spiritual leader post following the recent death of the incumbent, Haron Din.

Ahmad who is, meanwhile, carrying out the tasks of the party’s mursyidul am (spiritual leader), gave his various commitments including his duties as Kelantan menteri besar and state PAS commissioner as the reason for him not being keen on the post.

“I ask that someone among my colleagues take over the spiritual leader post. If can, I want to remain as the deputy. There are others who qualify to hold the post but I cannot openly make suggestions.

“Personally, I feel it is better for me to remain as deputy spiritual leader. I already have a lot of tasks...l et us divide the (party) tasks,” he told reporters after chairing the state executive council meeting in Kota Bharu today.

The PAS spiritual leader post became vacant upon the death of Haron on Sept 16 while undergoing treatment for heart complications at Stanford University Hospital, San Francisco.

He was laid to rest at the Five Pillars Muslim cemetery in Laughlin Road, Livermore, California.

Asked what could happen if the party’s ulama syura council wanted him to hold the mursyidul am post, Ahmad said: “It (council) has not met yet, so one can’t assume. But (I am giving) the signal that I want to remain as the deputy... that is the best.”
